Social and cultural anthropology are concerned with understanding the cultures, societies, and behaviors of people around the world. Typically social or cultural anthropologists study the behavior, beliefs, history, and lifestyles of people in other cultures or subcultures. However, the approaches anthropologists take are as diverse as the people who are studied. This encyclopedia summarizes some of the essential ideas, lives, and works of many of the key people who have built or had a major impact on the disciplines of social and cultural anthropology over the last several hundred years.
